Description

Oxoid™ Cetrimide Agar (USP, EP) (Dehydrated) is designed for the selective isolation and differentiation of Pseudomonas aeruginosa from various sample types. The medium contains magnesium chloride and potassium sulfate, which enhance pigment production and improve the recovery of Pseudomonas aeruginosa, while effectively inhibiting the growth of Klebsiella, Proteus, and Providencia species. This medium meets European Pharmacopoeia standards for Microbial Limit Tests.

Cetrimide Agar (USP, EP) is a refined version of the medium originally developed by Brown and Lowbury for the selective isolation of Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Cetrimide, a quaternary ammonium compound, possesses bactericidal properties that target a wide range of Gram-positive organisms and some Gram-negative bacteria.

On this medium, Pseudomonas aeruginosa produces distinctive fluorescent green colonies, while the growth of Klebsiella, Proteus, and Providencia is significantly suppressed.

  • Enhanced pigment production supports reliable identification
  • Complies with U.S. Pharmacopeia and European Pharmacopoeia standards for Microbial Limit Tests
  • Aligns with A.O.A.C. guidelines for the isolation of Pseudomonas aeruginosa from cosmetic products and follows A.O.A.C. methods for testing disinfectants on hard surfaces

The characteristic bright green color of Pseudomonas aeruginosa results from the combination of yellow-green or yellow-brown fluorescent pyoverdin with the blue, water-soluble pyocyanin. The addition of magnesium chloride and potassium sulfate in the medium further enhances the production of these iron chelators, facilitating the clear identification of Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
