Description

Oxoid™ XLD Agar (5kg) is a highly selective and differential medium used for the isolation and differentiation of Salmonella and Shigella species from clinical, food, and environmental samples. The medium contains xylose, lysine, and deoxycholate, which allows for the identification of these pathogens based on their fermentation patterns, H₂S production, and the ability to utilise xylose. Salmonella species typically produce red colonies with black centres, while Shigella species form colourless colonies, making them easily distinguishable from other enteric bacteria.

Key Features:

  • Form: Dehydrated powder
  • Weight: 5kg
  • Application: Selective isolation and differentiation of Salmonella and Shigella species from clinical, food, and environmental samples
  • Composition: Contains xylose for carbohydrate fermentation, lysine for decarboxylation, deoxycholate to inhibit Gram-positive bacteria, and sodium thiosulphate and ferric ammonium citrate for H₂S detection
  • Preparation: Suspend 84g of the dehydrated medium in 1 litre of distilled water, mix thoroughly, and autoclave at 121°C for 15 minutes
  • Yield: Approximately 59.5 litres of prepared medium
  • Storage: Store the dehydrated medium at 10–30°C, protected from moisture and light
  • Compliance: Suitable for use in microbiological testing protocols for the detection of Salmonella and Shigella spp. in food, water, and clinical samples
