Description
Oxoid™ SS Agar Modified (Dehydrated) is a selective and differential medium designed for the isolation and differentiation of Salmonella and Shigella species from clinical, food, and environmental samples. The improved formulation enhances the growth of Shigella spp. and provides clearer colony characteristics for Salmonella spp., including more pronounced black centers due to hydrogen sulfide production.
Supplied in a 500g dehydrated powder format (catalog number CM0533B), this medium yields approximately 8.8 liters of prepared agar. It is ideal for laboratories requiring reliable performance in detecting enteric pathogens in samples with mixed microbial flora.
Key Features:
- Form: Dehydrated powder
- Weight: 500g
- Application: Isolation and differentiation of Salmonella and Shigella spp. from clinical, food, and environmental samples
- Composition: Peptones, lactose, bile salts, sodium citrate, sodium thiosulfate, ferric citrate, brilliant green, neutral red, agar
- Function: Selective inhibition of non-target organisms; differentiation based on lactose fermentation and hydrogen sulfide production
- Preparation: Suspend 57g in 1 liter of distilled water, bring to the boil with frequent agitation, and allow to simmer gently to dissolve the agar. Do not autoclave. Cool to approximately 50°C, mix well, and pour into sterile Petri dishes.
