Description
Oxoid™ SIM Medium (500g) is a multi-purpose differential medium used for the determination of three key bacterial characteristics: sulphide production, indole formation, and motility. It is commonly employed in the identification of Enterobacteriaceae and other Gram-negative rods in clinical microbiology, offering a convenient way to conduct three tests in one tube.

- Composition: Peptones and beef extract provide nutrients; sodium thiosulphate and ferric ammonium citrate allow H₂S detection; low agar concentration facilitates observation of motility
- Preparation: Suspend 30g of the dehydrated medium in 1 litre of distilled water, mix thoroughly, and autoclave at 121°C for 15 minutes
- Yield: Approximately 16.7 litres of prepared medium
- Storage: Store the dehydrated medium at 10–30°C, protected from moisture and light
- Compliance: Suitable for use in microbiological testing protocols, particularly for identification within the Enterobacteriaceae family
