Description

Schaedler Anaerobe Agar is formulated for the cultivation and isolation of both aerobic and anaerobic organisms from the intestinal tract. These organisms often require selective conditions to suppress the overgrowth of background flora such as Escherichia coli.

The medium contains cysteine, which provides selective inhibition against E. coli by interfering with several of its enzymatic processes in vitro.¹ Unlike media that include thioglycollate, Schaedler Anaerobe Agar uses cysteine hydrochloride and glucose as reducing agents, fostering the growth of fastidious microorganisms while limiting the growth of competing species.

Free from thioglycollate, this formulation avoids potential inhibitory effects on certain anaerobes that have been reported in previous studies.²,³

This medium is particularly useful for isolating delicate, nutritionally demanding intestinal microbes that would otherwise be overshadowed by more robust organisms such as enterococci, coliforms, bacilli, and other Gram-negative bacilli.

Key Features:

  • Selective against non-target Gram-negative bacteria, especially Escherichia coli

  • Supports the growth of both aerobic and anaerobic intestinal microorganisms

  • Originally formulated by Schaedler, Dubos, and Costello³ for isolating gastrointestinal microbes in mice

  • Later adapted by Mata, Carrillo, and Villatoro⁴ for studies on human fecal anaerobic flora
