Product Description
Oxoid™ Penase is an enzyme (lactamase) derived from Bacillus cereus. It comes as a freeze-dried powder in vials, each containing 3,300 International Units (IU) of activity. When mixed with sterile water, it creates a solution that can break down penicillin-type antibiotics. This is useful in microbiology testing where these antibiotics might interfere with results.
Applications
- Sterility Testing: Added to culture media to neutralise penicillin in samples, ensuring accurate sterility checks.
- Blood Culture Procedures: Used in blood culture broths to prevent antibiotics from stopping bacterial growth.
- Research & Clinical Labs: For experiments where penicillin needs to be inactivated in samples.
Benefits
- Effective Neutralisation: Quickly inactivates penicillin and similar antibiotics, preventing false results.
- Easy to Prepare: Just add sterile water to reconstitute the powder.
- Stable: Long shelf life (up to 24 months when stored at 2–8°C in freeze-dried form; 4 weeks after reconstitution).
- Reliable: Ensures accurate microbiological testing by removing antibiotic interference.
