Description

Oxoid™ MacConkey Agar is a differential and selective medium designed for the detection, isolation, and enumeration of coliforms and intestinal pathogens in water, dairy products, and other biological specimens. This medium is commonly used in clinical, environmental, and food microbiology for the identification of lactose-fermenting and non-fermenting bacteria.

The medium contains bile salts and crystal violet to inhibit the growth of gram-positive organisms, allowing the selective growth of gram-negative bacteria. Lactose fermentation is indicated by a colour change in the medium, providing a simple method for differentiation.

Key Features:

  • Form: Dehydrated powder
  • Pack Size: 500g
  • Application: Detection and enumeration of coliforms and intestinal pathogens
  • Composition: Peptone, lactose, bile salts, sodium chloride, neutral red, agar
  • Preparation: Suspend 52g in 1 litre of distilled water; autoclave at 121°C for 15 minutes
  • Storage: Store the dehydrated medium at 10–30°C; store prepared medium below 25°C
  • Yield: Approximately 9.6 litres of medium
  • Differentiation: Lactose fermenters produce red colonies; non-fermenters produce colourless colonies
