Description

Oxoid™ Lysine Iron Agar (500g) is a differential medium used primarily for the identification and differentiation of Enterobacteriaceae based on their ability to decarboxylate lysine and produce hydrogen sulphide (H₂S). It is commonly used in diagnostic microbiology to aid in the presumptive identification of organisms such as Salmonella and Citrobacter species from clinical and food samples.

Key Features:

  • Form: Dehydrated powder
  • Weight: 500g
  • Application: Differentiation of Enterobacteriaceae based on lysine decarboxylation and H₂S production
  • Composition: Contains lysine for decarboxylation testing, glucose as a fermentable carbohydrate, ferric ammonium citrate and sodium thiosulphate for H₂S detection
  • Preparation: Suspend 34g of the dehydrated medium in 1 litre of distilled water, mix thoroughly, and autoclave at 121°C for 15 minutes
  • Yield: Approximately 14.7 litres of prepared medium
  • Storage: Store the dehydrated medium at 10–30°C, protected from moisture and light
  • Compliance: Suitable for use in clinical, food, and environmental microbiology for the differentiation of enteric bacteria
