Description

Oxoid™ Kanamycin Aesculin Azide Agar (500g) is a selective medium used for the isolation and differentiation of Enterococcus species, particularly from food, water, and clinical samples. The medium contains kanamycin to inhibit the growth of Gram-negative bacteria, sodium azide to inhibit Gram-positive bacteria other than Enterococcus, and esculin, which allows for the differentiation of Enterococcus species based on their ability to hydrolyse esculin. The hydrolysis of esculin leads to the formation of a black precipitate, which is characteristic of Enterococcus growth.

Key Features:

  • Form: Dehydrated powder
  • Weight: 500g
  • Application: Isolation and differentiation of Enterococcus species from clinical, food, and environmental samples
  • Composition: Contains kanamycin for the inhibition of Gram-negative bacteria, sodium azide to suppress the growth of most Gram-positive organisms except Enterococcus, and esculin for the differentiation based on hydrolysis
  • Preparation: Suspend 44g of the dehydrated medium in 1 litre of distilled water, mix thoroughly, and autoclave at 121°C for 15 minutes
  • Yield: Approximately 11.4 litres of prepared medium
  • Storage: Store the dehydrated medium at 10–30°C, protected from moisture and light
  • Compliance: Suitable for use in microbiological testing protocols for the detection and differentiation of Enterococcus species
