Oxoid™ Columbia Blood Agar Base 500g

Oxoid™ Columbia Blood Agar Base (500g) is a highly nutritious, general-purpose medium used for the cultivation of fastidious organisms, particularly in clinical microbiology. When supplemented with sterile defibrinated blood, it becomes an enriched medium capable of supporting the growth of a wide variety of pathogenic bacteria and is commonly used for the observation of haemolytic reactions, such as alpha, beta, or gamma haemolysis.

• Application: Cultivation of fastidious organisms and observation of haemolytic activity, especially in clinical specimens
• Composition: Contains peptones and yeast extract to promote the growth of demanding organisms; base medium for blood supplementation
• Preparation: Suspend 39g of the dehydrated medium in 1 litre of distilled water, mix thoroughly, and autoclave at 121°C for 15 minutes. Cool to 45–50°C before adding 5–10% sterile defibrinated blood.
• Yield: Approximately 12.8 litres of prepared medium
• Storage: Store the dehydrated medium at 10–30°C, protected from moisture and light
