Description

Oxoid™ CLED Medium (500g) is a non-selective and differential medium designed for the cultivation of urinary pathogens, particularly Escherichia coli and other Enterobacteriaceae, from urine samples. The medium contains cysteine and lactose, which allow for the differentiation of lactose fermenters from non-fermenters. Lactose fermenters produce yellow colonies, while non-fermenters produce blue or green colonies. CLED (Cystine-Lactose-Electrolyte-Deficient) medium is particularly useful for reducing the swarming of Proteus species, enabling clearer colony enumeration.

Key Features:

  • Form: Dehydrated powder
  • Weight: 500g
  • Application: Cultivation and differentiation of urinary pathogens, especially Escherichia coli and Enterobacteriaceae, from urine samples
  • Composition: Contains cysteine, lactose, and a reduced concentration of electrolytes, which helps inhibit Proteus species swarming and promotes colony clarity
  • Preparation: Suspend 40g of the dehydrated medium in 1 litre of distilled water, mix thoroughly, and autoclave at 121°C for 15 minutes
  • Yield: Approximately 12 litres of prepared medium
  • Storage: Store the dehydrated medium at 10–30°C, protected from moisture and light
  • Compliance: Suitable for use in microbiological testing protocols for the cultivation and differentiation of urinary pathogens
