Description
Presumptively detect, isolate and enumerate pathogenic staphylococci in milk, food, fish and other samples with ready-to-use Thermo Scientific™ Oxoid™ Mannitol Salt Agar (EP, USP, JP, BP). Due to high concentrations of salt in the medium, most unwanted bacteria are inhibited with the exception of some halophilic marine organisms.
Presumptive coagulase-positive staphylococci produce colonies surrounded by bright yellow zones while non-pathogenic staphylococci produce colonies with reddish purple zones.
The medium is tested in accordance with International Pharmacopoeia.1,2,3,4
Staphylococcus aureus is a coagulase-positive, catalase-positive, Gram-positive cocci that occurs singly or in pairs, tetrads, short chains, and grape-like clusters. S. aureus can produce a variety of syndromes with clinical manifestations, including skin and soft tissue infections, empyema, bloodstream infections, pneumonia, osteomyelitis, septic arthritis, endocarditis, sepsis, and meningitis.
Use Mannitol Salt Agar (EP, USP, JP, BP) for clear and easy differentiation of Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus epidermis from food samples while most other bacteria are inhibited by the high salt concentration.
- Highly selective due to high concentrations of salt in the medium.
- Easy to differentiate: Staphylococcus aureus forms yellow colonies with yellow halo while Staphylococcus epidermis forms pink colonies with pink medium.
- Conforms to formulations detailed in International Pharmacopoeia Ready-to-use convenience of prepared media.
