Description
Legionella GVPC Agar (Glycine Vancomycin Polymyxin Cycloheximide) is a culture medium used in laboratories to find and grow Legionella bacteria from water samples.
In simple terms, it helps labs answer the question: “Is Legionella present in this water sample?”
Legionella is:
- Slow‑growing
- Easily overgrown by other bacteria
- Hard to detect on standard laboratory media
GVPC Agar contains selective ingredients that suppress unwanted bacteria, giving Legionella the space and time it needs to appear on the plate. Without this type of agar, Legionella may be completely missed.
It is recommended by and conforms to the formulation and performance requirements of ISO 11731:2017
Key features and benefits
- Ready to use – no preparation needed
- Supplied as a pre‑poured plate, saving time and removing the need to prepare media in the lab.
- This GVPC helps find Legionella more easily as it encourages Legionella to grow while reducing the growth of other bacteria that could hide it
- Improves accuracy and consistency
- Pre‑poured plates ensure the same quality every time, helping deliver reliable and repeatable results
- Saves time and reduces workload
- No weighing, mixing or pouring required – ideal for busy laboratories and routine testing
Reduces the risk of errors or contamination
Prepared under controlled conditions, helping improve safety and reliability compared to in‑house preparation
Makes Legionella colonies easier to see and count during testing
Suitable for routine testing
Widely used for regular Legionella monitoring in water testing laboratories
Applications: Ideal for organisations requiring reliable, repeatable and controlled laboratory testing across regulated industries where consistency, accuracy and good laboratory practice are essential
Food and Drink Manufacturing and processing:
- Quality control testing within food and drink manufacturing laboratories
- Routine laboratory testing to support production consistency and process control
- Internal QA and technical departments monitoring materials, samples or test procedures
- R&D and pilot facilities involved in product development and testing workflows
- Concrete cube testing and construction materials testing for compressive strength assessment
- Quality control and compliance testing within UKAS‑accredited laboratories
- Civil engineering and infrastructure projects, including highways, commercial, residential and structural developments
- Contractor and site laboratories carrying out routine concrete testing during construction programmes
- Independent testing laboratories performing third‑party verification and materials assessment
