Description

The HiMedia Ampicillin Dextrin Agar Base (M1262) is a specialised microbiological culture medium designed for the selective and differential isolation of Aeromonas species from water samples, particularly when using the membrane filtration technique.

This medium performs well in suppressing competing flora, especially gram-positive organisms and many gram-negative bacteria, due to the presence of ampicillin. The inclusion of dextrin as a fermentable carbohydrate and bromothymol blue as a pH indicator allows clear differentiation, with Aeromonas typically producing bright yellow colonies that are easy to identify.

Growth performance is consistent, and the medium provides good recovery of Aeromonas hydrophila under standard incubation conditions. However, as this is a base medium, it requires the addition of the appropriate selective supplement and should be used by laboratories familiar with standard media preparation techniques.

Overall, M1262 is a reliable and effective medium for environmental and water microbiology laboratories seeking a targeted method for isolating Aeromonas species, though confirmatory testing is still required for final identification.
