Oxoid™ X.L.D. Medium (Dehydrated) is a selective and differential medium formulated for the isolation and differentiation of Salmonella and Shigella species from clinical specimens and food samples. The medium utilizes xylose fermentation, lysine decarboxylation, and hydrogen sulfide production to distinguish between these pathogens and non-pathogenic bacteria.

• Selective Agents: Sodium desoxycholate inhibits the growth of Gram-positive organisms and many Gram-negative organisms other than Salmonella and Shigella
• Differentiation:
• Salmonella: Red colonies with black centers due to hydrogen sulfide production
• Shigella: Red colonies without black centers
• Other coliforms: Yellow colonies due to acid production from lactose fermentation
• Preparation: Suspend 53g in 1 liter of distilled water, heat with frequent agitation until the medium boils. Do not overheat. Cool to 50°C and pour into sterile Petri dishes. Do not autoclave.
• Yield: Approximately 56.6 liters of prepared medium
• Storage: Store the dehydrated medium at 10–30°C, protected from moisture and light
