Description
Oxoid™ Violet Red Bile Glucose Agar (5kg) is a selective and differential medium primarily used for the isolation and enumeration of coliforms, especially Escherichia coli and other Gram-negative bacteria, from food, water, and environmental samples. The medium is designed to inhibit the growth of Gram-positive organisms while promoting the growth of coliforms, which ferment glucose and produce acid. Coliforms typically form red or pink colonies, making them easy to distinguish from non-fermenters.
Key Features:
- Form: Dehydrated powder
- Weight: 5kg
- Application: Isolation and enumeration of coliform bacteria, particularly E. coli, from food, water, and environmental samples
- Composition: Contains bile salts and crystal violet to inhibit Gram-positive bacteria, glucose for fermentation, and neutral red as a pH indicator to visually distinguish fermenting colonies
- Preparation: Suspend 47g of the dehydrated medium in 1 litre of distilled water, mix thoroughly, and autoclave at 121°C for 15 minutes
- Yield: Approximately 106.4 litres of prepared medium
- Storage: Store the dehydrated medium at 10–30°C, protected from moisture and light
- Compliance: Suitable for use in microbiological testing protocols for the detection of coliforms in water and food
