Description

Oxoid™ Triple Sugar Iron Agar (500g) is a differential medium used for the identification of enteric bacteria, particularly Salmonella and Shigella species. This medium contains three sugars—glucose, lactose, and sucrose—along with iron salts that allow for the detection of acid and gas production, as well as hydrogen sulphide (H2S) production. The characteristic colour changes and the formation of black precipitates help differentiate between various enteric pathogens based on their metabolic activities.

Key Features:

  • Form: Dehydrated powder
  • Weight: 500g
  • Application: Differentiation of enteric bacteria, especially Salmonella and Shigella
  • Composition: Contains glucose, lactose, sucrose, and iron salts; supports the detection of acid and gas production, as well as hydrogen sulphide (H2S) formation
  • Preparation: Suspend 47g of the dehydrated medium in 1 litre of distilled water, mix thoroughly, and autoclave at 121°C for 15 minutes
  • Yield: Approximately 10 litres of prepared medium
  • Storage: Store the dehydrated medium at 10–30°C, protected from moisture and light
  • Compliance: Suitable for use in microbiological testing protocols for the identification of enteric bacteria
