Description
Oxoid™ Rose Bengal Chloramphenicol Agar Base: Optimized for Yeast & Mold Enumeration in Foodstuffs
This dehydrated agar base is specifically formulated for the selective isolation and enumeration of yeasts and molds from a wide variety of food samples.
Key Features & Benefits:
-
Highly Selective: The medium's neutral pH and the presence of chloramphenicol effectively suppress bacterial growth (especially Gram-negative rods common in foods), allowing yeasts and molds to grow unimpeded.
-
Enhanced Counting Precision: Rose Bengal dye is absorbed by yeast and mold colonies, improving the visibility and enumeration of even small colonies.
-
Controlled Colony Spreading: Rose Bengal actively controls the size and height of mold colonies, preventing overgrowth that can obscure other organisms and ensuring easier, more accurate counting and detection.
-
Flexible Incubation: Thanks to the stability of chloramphenicol, this agar is highly suitable for higher and prolonged incubation temperatures, including around 35°C, offering versatility for various testing protocols.
Ideal Applications:
-
Recommended for the selective enumeration of molds and yeasts in diverse foodstuffs.
-
Particularly valuable for fresh proteinaceous foods where Gram-negative rod-shaped bacteria are the primary associated flora. (Note: While highly effective, users should be aware that chloramphenicol alone may not inhibit all bacterial backgrounds.)
