Description
Rapidly detect, isolate, and differentiate Listeria monocytogenes from food samples with the convenience of ready-to-use Thermo Scientific™ Oxoid™ PALCAM Medium.
PALCAM Medium is a powerful differential and selective diagnostic medium designed for the presumptive identification of L. monocytogenes. Its highly selective nature, combined with a double indicator system, allows for easy differentiation based on:
- Aesculin fermentation: Producing a characteristic black reaction.
- Lack of mannitol fermentation: Maintaining the medium's original pH.
The inclusion of egg yolk in the base also aids the recovery of any damaged Listeria cells.
Key Features & Differentiation:
- Highly Selective: Achieved through the incorporation of lithium chloride, ceftazidime, polymyxin B, and acriflavine hydrochloride, which effectively inhibit most competing microflora.
Easy to Read Differentiation:
- L. monocytogenes: Forms brown/black colonies with a black halo (due to aesculin hydrolysis).
- Contaminants (e.g., staphylococci, enterococci): Grow as yellow colonies (due to mannitol fermentation, changing the phenol red indicator from red to yellow).
- Double Indicator System: Utilizes Aesculin and Ferrous Iron (for black halo formation) and Mannitol and Phenol Red (for pH change).
- Convenience: Supplied as a ready-to-use prepared medium.
