Description
M.R.S. Agar is formulated to promote the growth of lactic acid bacteria, which includes species from the genera Lactobacillus, Streptococcus, Pediococcus, and Leuconostoc. These organisms are known for their ability to produce significant amounts of lactic acid.
This medium offers superior performance compared to the tomato juice medium developed by Briggs¹ and the meat extract tomato juice medium created by de Man.
It supports the growth of all lactobacilli strains, including the more challenging and slow-growing species such as Lactobacillus brevis and Lactobacillus fermenti.
Lactic acid bacteria are Gram-positive, catalase- and oxidase-negative, and have complex nutritional requirements. Their growth is greatly enhanced under microaerobic conditions. Typically, they exhibit delayed growth and form smaller colonies than other microorganisms. On non-selective media, they may be outcompeted—especially during longer incubation periods of 2–4 days.
