Description
Oxoid™ Mannitol Salt Agar (500g) is a selective and differential medium primarily used for the isolation and identification of Staphylococcus species, particularly Staphylococcus aureus, from clinical, food, and environmental samples. The high salt concentration inhibits the growth of most other bacteria, while mannitol fermentation allows for differentiation.
Key Features:
- Form: Dehydrated powder
- Weight: 500g
- Application: Isolation and differentiation of Staphylococcus spp., especially S. aureus
- Composition: Contains 7.5% sodium chloride to inhibit non-halotolerant organisms; mannitol and phenol red indicator allow detection of mannitol fermentation
- Preparation: Suspend 111g in 1 liter of distilled water, mix thoroughly, and autoclave at 121°C for 15 minutes
- Yield: Approximately 4.5 liters of prepared medium
- Storage: Store the dehydrated medium at 10–30°C, protected from moisture and light
- Compliance: Suitable for microbiological testing in clinical, food safety, and hygiene monitoring applications for the detection of S. aureus.
