Description
Description: Oxoid™ PO5028A, also known as Legionella BYCE Medium without Cysteine, is a ready-to-use petri dish (90 mm) filled with a straw-coloured agar designed specifically for testing water or clinical samples. It helps identify Legionella bacteria — the organisms behind Legionnaires' disease — by creating two comparison plates: one with the amino acid L‑cysteine and one without. Since Legionella must have L‑cysteine to grow, colonies that appear only on the plate with cysteine but not on PO5028A are presumed to be Legionella. It’s incubated around 35 °C, typically observed after 2–5 days. Each pack contains ten plates, each with approximately 19.5 g of agar, and must be stored between 2–10 °C.
These characteristics make PO5028A a valuable asset for labs needing rapid, standardized, and reliable screening of Legionella in both clinical and environmental contexts.
Benefits:
- Presumptive Identification of Legionella
It is designed to quickly tell apart Legionella bacteria by comparing growth on two plates—one with L‑cysteine and one without. If colonies grow only on the plate containing cysteine, it signals a presumptive Legionella presence. - Ready‑to‑Use Quality The plates arrive pre-poured (90 mm, straw-coloured agar, 19.5 g each), eliminating any need for lab staff to prepare or sterilize culture media.
-
Reliable Standards Compliance
Formulated according to recognized guidelines (ISO 11731, NF T 90‑431), and subjected to quality control via positive/negative bacterial tests, ensuring consistent and accurate performance.
-
Stable Storage and Shelf Life
The plates are stable when stored at 2–10 °C, with a shelf life of around 26 weeks, making them practical for inventory and usage planning.
Applications:
-
Food & Beverage Safety. Helps verify water used in production processes is free from Legionella, aiding in compliance with public health standards.
-
Clinical Microbiology. Used for diagnosing patients suspected of Legionella infections, by culturing respiratory samples like sputum, bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL), or bronchial aspirates.
-
Confirmatory Diagnostic Step. Serves as a key tool in microbiology workflows: after initial selective culture, it confirms whether suspected colonies truly require cysteine, a telltale of Legionella.
-
Environmental Monitoring.Employed in water testing—from drinking water to cooling towers—to check for Legionella contamination in places such as hospitals, factories, and recreational facilities.
