Description
Oxoid™ K-F Streptococcus Agar (500g) is a selective medium used for the isolation and differentiation of Streptococcus species, particularly Enterococcus species, from food, water, and clinical samples. The medium contains ingredients that support the growth of Streptococcus species while inhibiting the growth of other microorganisms. It also allows for differentiation based on the hydrolysis of esculin, a process that produces a characteristic blackened appearance in the agar, aiding in the identification of Enterococcus species.
Key Features:
- Form: Dehydrated powder
- Weight: 500g
- Application: Isolation and differentiation of Streptococcus and Enterococcus species from food, water, and clinical samples
- Composition: Contains esculin, which is hydrolysed by Enterococcus species, producing a characteristic black precipitate. The medium also contains selective agents to inhibit the growth of non-Streptococcus organisms
- Preparation: Suspend 49g of the dehydrated medium in 1 litre of distilled water, mix thoroughly, and autoclave at 121°C for 15 minutes
- Yield: Approximately 10.2 litres of prepared medium
- Storage: Store the dehydrated medium at 10–30°C, protected from moisture and light
- Compliance: Suitable for use in microbiological testing protocols for the detection and differentiation of Streptococcus and Enterococcus species
