Description
Giolitti-Cantoni Broth (Dehydrated) is a selective enrichment medium used for the detection of Staphylococcus aureus in food and animal feed, in accordance with ISO 6888-3:2003. When used with a sterile solution of potassium tellurite (SR0030), the medium promotes the recovery of S. aureus, even when present in low numbers.
The formulation includes mannitol and sodium pyruvate, which act as growth enhancers for staphylococci, supporting their recovery from stressed or low-count samples.
Lithium chloride inhibits the growth of Gram-negative lactose-fermenting bacilli, while the combination of potassium tellurite and glycine effectively suppresses Gram-positive bacilli other than staphylococci.
This broth is intended for anaerobic enrichment of Staphylococcus aureus from food samples.
Features:
-
Selective:
-
Lithium chloride targets Gram-negative bacilli
-
Potassium tellurite and glycine suppress Gram-positive organisms other than S. aureus
-
-
Visual indicator:
-
The presence of coagulase-positive staphylococci is confirmed by tellurite reduction, which results in blackening of the broth or formation of a black precipitate
-
Applications:
-
Recommended for detecting Staphylococcus aureus in dried infant formula and other weaning foods, where the organism must be absent in 1 g of product²
-
Suitable for testing meat and meat products³ — for these samples, potassium tellurite concentration should be reduced to 0.35%, and the sample size adjusted to 0.1–0.01 g
