Description
Oxoid™ Cefixime Tellurite Sorbitol MacConkey Agar (Dehydrated) is a selective and differential medium formulated for the isolation of Escherichia coli O157:H7 from food and clinical specimens. This medium is based on Sorbitol MacConkey Agar, enhanced with the addition of Cefixime and Potassium Tellurite to improve selectivity by inhibiting the growth of non-target organisms.
Key Features:
- Form: Dehydrated powder
- Weight: 2.5kg
- Application: Isolation of E. coli O157:H7 from food and clinical specimens
- Selective Agents: Cefixime and Potassium Tellurite inhibit the growth of competing flora, enhancing the recovery of E. coli O157:H7
- Differentiation: E. coli O157:H7 does not ferment sorbitol, resulting in colourless colonies; most other E. coli strains ferment sorbitol, producing pink colonies due to the neutral red indicator
- Preparation: Suspend 52.5g in 1 litre of distilled water, mix thoroughly, and bring to the boil to dissolve completely. Do not autoclave. Cool to 50°C, aseptically add the Cefixime Tellurite Selective Supplement (SR0172), mix well, and pour into sterile Petri dishes
- Yield: Approximately 48.5 litres of prepared medium
- Storage: Store the dehydrated medium at 10–30°C, protected from moisture and light
- Compliance: Suitable for use in microbiological testing protocols for the detection of E. coli O157:H7
