Description
Leeds Acinetobacter Agar Base is recommended for isolating Acinetobacter spp. from hospital environments and selecting Multi Drug Resistant (MDR) Acinetobacter, enhanced by the addition of MDR Selective Supplement (FD271) or Leeds Acinetobacter Selective Supplement to deter contaminating microflora. Carbohydrate sources such as Sucrose, Fructose, and Mannitol are incorporated. Phenylalanine acts as a substrate for enzymes, leading to the formation of phenylpyruvic acid, resulting in brown-black colonies in species like Providencia when reacting with ferric ions from ferric ammonium citrate. The phenol red in the medium serves as a pH indicator. Carbohydrate utilization yields yellow colonies due to acidity, while liberation of ammonia ions from nitrogenous material produces pink colonies. Acinetobacter baumannii exhibits pink mucoid colonies with the diffusion of a pink color into the medium.
