Description
Isolate and differentiate Salmonella and Shigella species from clinical samples easily and with improved selectivity with Thermo Scientific™ Desoxycholate Citrate Agar (Hynes Modification) media plates.
An improved medium, based on the Hynes1 modification of Leifson’s medium2, Desoxycholate Citrate Agar (Hynes Modification) makes the isolation of salmonellae and shigellae easier.
Easier colony selection: improved medium gives larger and more numerous colonies of Shigella species which can easily be picked off and emulsified in saline for slide agglutination tests
Improved selectivity: more inhibitory to coliforms and Proteus species than the original Desoxycholate Citrate Agar (Part No. CM0035B)
Ready-to-use: convenience of prepared media.
The medium is pale pink, due to the inclusion of Neutral Red indicator, and clear. Lactose fermenting organisms produce pink colonies and may be surrounded by a zone of precipitated desoxycholic acid.
The colonies of non-lactose fermenters are colorless, and, due to their alkaline reaction, they are surrounded by a clear orange-yellow zone of medium.
Escherichia coli survives on the medium even though it does not usually grow; therefore, colonial purity should be established by subculture on to a differential but less inhibitory medium, e.g., MacConkey Agar
