Stains

A 0.5% working solution of Crystal violet which is the dye of choice for use in Gram's stain for the demonstration of bacteria. Also known as Gentian Violet

A 1% Aqueous working solution of Safranin O which is most commonly used for counterstaining nuclei red for example in the Gram staining method. In medical histotechnology it has little other use, although it has been used to stain cartilage.

A working solution of Grams Iodine which is used as part of a Gram Staining Protocol, commonly used in the detection of bacteria.

A working solution of Carbol Fuchsin Gram, also known as Gram Fuchsin. It is a commonly used counterstain in the Gram staining method used to demonstrate Gram Positive and Gram Negative Micro-organisms in tissue sections and/or smears.

A 10 x concentrated solution of potassium permanganate. The dilute reagent is often used to oxidise tissue components when performing certain staining protocols. It also reduces non specific fluorescence when the TB fluorescent protocol is used.

A concentrated solution of Auramine Phenol which is a stain used in clinical microbiology and histology. Auramine phenol is a fluorescent stain used for the demonstration of acid fast bacilli such as M. Tuberculosis..

A concentrated solution of Malachite Green, the dilute solution is often used as a counterstain in the acid fast bacilli staining procedure

A 7 x concentrate  solution used in bacterial staining procedures.It is commonly used in the staining of mycobacteria and the ZN version usually requires heat. Carbol-fuchsin is also used as a topical antiseptic.
